GIS Mapping for Planning New Energy Services in Ghana

  Key Benefits of GIS Project

The GIS mapping exercercise offers the following benefits:

o An up-to-date and comprehensive visual profile of electrification services in Ghana

o An effective tool in visualizing existing, proposed and potential energy services under the ongoing rural electrification program

o A quick and effective method of communicating complex information to planners, entrepreneurs, stakeholders, actors and policy makers in the energy sector

o A knowledge base which can be expanded into an inclusive catalogue of national and local energy services (wind, hydro, grid, PV, etc.), as time and resources allow

Data Sources

The electrification data was collected from four (4) official sources:

1) Ministry of Energy, Accra, Ghana
2) Electrical Company of Ghana, Accra,
    Ghana
2) Northern Electricity Department,
    Tamale,Ghana
4) Acres International, Oakville, Canada

  GIS Mapping results

The final results yielded a full-scale GIS map of the electrification status in the Brong Ahafo region.
